What To Do When You Have A Roof Leak
Houston Home Roofing Contractor
On a very windy night, the rain comes pouring down and suddenly you feel a drip. At first you think that it isn't anything to worry about but then you feel another drip, then another, and another. Soon you feel a steady drip on top of your head and you now have a crisis on your hands. You can go get a bucket and catch the water until after the rain is over and this will help but it just means that you are okay until after the rain and then you are going to need to fix the leak. A roof leak happens when you are not prepared. No matter what type of roofing you have on your roof, you are going to spend some money to fix the problem and patch it up until you can replace the entire roof.
A roof leak could be due to a crack that has formed on a shingle. If you have a flat roof you may have a crack in the roof or a blister type bump to form. A roof leak can be fixed by a homeowner or you can hire someone to do the repair for you however you may have more in a repair that could have been applied toward a new roof.
To fix a roof leak yourself, you will need to have tools and supplies that include a knife, trowel, nails, hammer, a brush with metal bristles, roof patch fabric, and roof cement.
It's time to begin. First you need to locate the area that the leak occurred in. You know where you were sitting when the drips started coming down so you will need to locate the area on top of the roof. If you find more than one spot, you will need to mark it with a marker so you can repair a roof leak everywhere it is needed.
Remove all the cement or tar that is on the leaking area. Remove all the dirt and debris that is on the roof and if there is any water on the roof you want to use your cloth to soak it up. Now you can place the new material down and fill all the cracks around it with roofing cement. Go over the cracks well so you are sure to seal the cracks.
Now you can place the roofing shingle down into place and finish the project. Secure the shingle into place and now you are ready to let it dry. You need to apply the new roof shingle to the roof leak before another big rain comes along other wise you may find yourself sitting in your chair with a bucket again. Twice a year make it a point to walk around inside your home and observe the ceilings for moisture rings and any signs of a roof leak.
